That's a version of the lyrics from Ravenscroft's "Of All the Birds", which goes like this:
Of all the birds that ever I see, The Owl is the fairest in her degree, For all the day long, she sits in a tree And when the night comes, away flies she.
To whit, to who, to whom drink'st thou? Sir knave to thee This song is well sung, I make you a vow, And he is a knave that drinkest now
Nose, nose, jolly red nose, And who gave me that jolly red nose? Cinnamon and ginger, nutmeg and cloves And that gave thee thy jolly red nose.
From Thomas Ravenscroft's Deuteromelia 1609 http://www2.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Of_all_the_birds_that_ever_I_see_(Thomas_Ravenscroft)
My grandmother too also recited the same version above. She's 91 yrs old. It took me years to find this poem bc she would say bits and pieces of it since i was a kid, till recently she said the whole thing and i looked it up as fast as i could. Love this poem as well and now it has such sentimental value.
The owl, of all the queer birds I ever did see, the owl is the queerest by far to me, for all day long she sits on the tree, and when the night comes away fly sea!!!
My mama teach me this poem when I was 4 years old, now I'm 37 and I still memorize it and my mother passed away 3 months ago and I cried each time I remember her and this poem is very special in my heart :( I miss you mama
This is the only poem i remember too when i was a kindergarten.. i am 40 now. My teacher name is Ms. Almiñana. i can only recite bits of it as I don't know many words back then and don't understand them.
Please correct "By part of me" to "By far to me". Also, it should be "For all day long", instead of "Of all day long". Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThis poem must be R.P. origin, because this is the one and the only poem I knew from my Mama.
ReplyDeleteTo me personally, I like it.
from my Papa also
